Safety in Kyrgyzstan: what overland travellers should know

Safety
- No remote rescue — Agencies in the country sell extreme sports such as heli-skiing and hard alpinism, but no organisation in Kyrgyzstan can mount a rescue in the remote areas where they operate, and in no case above 4,000 m. Plan your own self-recovery.
- Batken and Tajik border — The Batken region along the boundary with Tajikistan calls for prudence when moving around, especially in outlying areas and at the crossing points, where the way a border post operates can change. Check the situation with the local authorities before setting off that way.
- The south — Caution is advised in southern Kyrgyzstan, in particular the Osh and Manas (formerly Jalal-Abad) regions and near the borders with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Use official border crossings only and check for updates on local conditions first.
- Earthquakes, slides and floods — Seismic activity is high, above all in the eastern and north-eastern regions. The mountains bring landslides, avalanches and floods, especially during the spring thaw or after heavy rain, and glacial lake outburst floods add to that. Some basins are monitored by international bodies but the national warning system is still limited, so follow weather bulletins and stay out of flood- and slide-prone areas in spring and summer.
- Crime and gatherings — Public demonstrations now mostly pass off peacefully, but avoid crowds and rallies. Pickpocketing and petty theft are reported in the cities, Bishkek included, mainly in markets and on public transport and after dark. Do not display jewellery or expensive watches.
