Egypt for overland travelers
Egypt is usually imagined through Cairo, the Nile and the Red Sea, but its overland identity is written in the deserts around them. The Western Desert can support serious 4x4 travel: Bahariya, Farafra, the White Desert, Black Desert, Crystal Mountain, Siwa and long empty routes where geology, oases and Bedouin knowledge matter more than conventional sightseeing.
The White Desert and Bahariya area are the most approachable desert routes, often handled by local operators with 4x4 vehicles and overnight camps.
