Do you need a local guide in Uganda?
Strongly advised. You can drive yourself, but not do everything yourself. Uganda Wildlife Authority lets you take your own vehicle into its parks and publishes a fee for a self-drive game drive without a guide. The exceptions are the activities most visitors come for. UWA's conservation tariff states that gorilla and chimpanzee permits for foreign non-residents can only be booked through licensed tour operators, and its guides are mandatory on night game drives. The Italian foreign ministry goes further and advises relying only on reliable agencies for park visits and local transfers.
Why it matters in Uganda
- Primate permits go through operators — According to Uganda Wildlife Authority's tariff, all gorilla and chimpanzee permits for foreign non-residents can only be booked through licensed tour operators. A gorilla group takes at most eight visitors, visits are limited to one hour a day, and the minimum age for tracking is 15. (Uganda Wildlife Authority — Conservation Tariff July 2024–June 2026)
- Your own vehicle, within limits — By day you may drive yourself through the parks, but UWA rules forbid driving off the tracks and cap speed at 40 km/h. Motorcycles and trailers are prohibited in protected areas without the express approval of UWA's Executive Director, and night game drives, open only to guests sleeping inside the park, require a UWA guide. - Agencies, daylight, more than one car — The Italian foreign ministry asks travellers to leave the cities only in daylight and with more than one vehicle, or at least in company, and to use only reliable agencies for local transfers and national park visits, checking with the Italian embassy in Kampala before going into a park. - The parks along the Congo border — Rebel groups active in the DRC can cross into Uganda. After the attack on two foreign tourists and a local guide in Queen Elizabeth National Park on 17 October 2023, the ministry advises maximum caution in and around that park and between Lake Albert and Lake Edward, the Rwenzori and Semuliki included, above all when moving at night. - Which licensed tour operator will book my gorilla or chimpanzee permits?
- Can my trailer or motorcycle enter the parks on our route, or do we need UWA's approval first?
- Which days of the route run close to the Congo border, and how do you plan them?
- What is the plan for the last Saturday of the month, when non-essential traffic stops from 07:00 to 10:00?
