Safety in Mauritius: what overland travellers should know

Safety
- Theft is rising — Because thefts have increased, pay close attention when you move around, above all at night and in isolated areas. Keep doors and windows shut, do not let strangers in, and stay alert in exposed moments such as withdrawing cash.
- Cyclones November to April — During the local summer the rain can arrive as cyclonic weather, and violent continuous rainfall floods even the main urban areas. Check the Mauritius Meteorological Services forecasts, and do not stop near watercourses during prolonged heavy rain.
- Beaches and isolated spots — Keep particular watch on beaches and in isolated places, especially after dark and if you are travelling alone.
- Everyday precautions — Avoid demonstrations and gatherings, and do not show off cash or valuables. Keep a photocopy of your passport separate from the original.
