Do you need a local guide in Mauritius?
Not needed for most trips. No. Nothing in either source makes a guide necessary to get around Mauritius, and much of the island — including the trails in Black River Gorges — can be walked on your own. If you do hire a guide, Mauritius licenses the profession through the Tourism Authority under three separate categories, so it's worth checking the operator or guide is actually on that list rather than working off-book.
