Safety in Liberia: what overland travellers should know

Safety
- Avoid Lofa County — The ministry strongly recommends avoiding all movement in the northern county of Lofa. It also advises against travel to the border areas with Guinea because of the precarious political and security situation.
- Fragile security — Public order has improved steadily since the civil war years, but security conditions remain fragile and the local authorities' capacity to intervene or assist is limited.
- Petty crime — Petty crime is widespread in Monrovia and the country's main towns. Do not carry valuables.
- No travel at night — The advice is explicit: do not travel during the night. Get up-to-date information before any journey.
- Terrorism — Incidents connected to the instability affecting the Sahel, where terrorist groups operate, cannot be ruled out.
- Missing infrastructure — Urban centres still lack essential infrastructure, including the water and electricity networks and street lighting at night.
