Rules for overlanding in Liberia

Which licence you need
- All vehicles — Getting an Italian licence recognised requires local formalities; otherwise the national licence must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit, with the 1968 Vienna model also recognised. Check what applies to the licence you hold.
An International Driving Permit states the categories it covers: check yours covers what you will actually drive. A car licence does not cover a motorcycle, and a heavy camper or a truck can need a higher category.
At the wheel
- Insurance — Third-party liability cover is compulsory.
- Temporary import — A Carnet de Passage en Douane is required for a vehicle brought in temporarily.
- Plan your movements — Organise journeys and city transfers in advance: there is no safe public transport, and Monrovia's international airport is 48 km from the capital, about an hour away.
- No photos at checkpoints — Do not use cameras near government offices, military installations, ports or airports, or during religious ceremonies.
- ID on you — Carry photo identification at all times during your stay. The police can ask for it at any moment.
What catches travellers out
- Cash only — US dollars circulate on a par with the local currency, while euros are not accepted and are not easily converted. Credit cards are barely accepted and their use is discouraged because of cloning, so arrive with enough cash to cover your costs.
- Drugs — Importing, holding and selling drugs, including soft drugs, carries very severe sentences served in prisons where conditions are very hard.
- Homosexuality — Homosexuality is illegal.
- Visa and passport — A visa is required, applied for in advance or through the Liberia Immigration Service's visa-on-arrival service. Your passport needs at least six months' validity on arrival.
