Rules for overlanding in Guatemala
Our summary of the country advice published by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Viaggiare Sicuri) on 17 February 2026.
Which licence you need
- All vehicles — An Italian licence is what the ministry lists. Check what applies to the licence you hold.
An International Driving Permit states the categories it covers: check yours covers what you will actually drive. A car licence does not cover a motorcycle, and a heavy camper or a truck can need a higher category.
At the wheel
- Insurance — Third-party liability cover is compulsory, plus comprehensive (kasko) cover.
- Roads — The road network is inadequate and poorly maintained, and the rainy season from May to November always makes roads hard to drive because of landslides. Keep maximum caution on the whole network, given the badly deteriorated surfaces and the poorly maintained local vehicles sharing the road.
- Check the route first — Before setting out, check with local contacts the general and above all the road conditions at your destination, and whether essential services are actually available there.
- Not at night — Avoid travelling at night and travelling alone, and do not venture on your own outside the classic tourist circuits. Group trips are preferable to individual travel.
- Crash means being held — The Ley de transito provides for the precautionary detention of everyone involved in a road accident that may have caused injuries.
- Buses and taxis — Avoid urban buses and use only authorised, trusted radio taxis: there have been armed attacks on drivers and passengers, including recently. Choose your transport carefully in general, because poor maintenance causes serious accidents.
- Tourist police — The authorities run a tourist assistance service, PROATUR, on 1500, and a tourist security division of the national police, operating from 08.00 to 22.00.
What catches travellers out
- Drugs — The Ley Antidrogas punishes trafficking and consumption of even minimal quantities, including substances that are legal in other countries: one to three years for consuming up to a gram, twelve to twenty years for trafficking. Never accept letters, parcels or packets from strangers.
- Cash limit — You may not enter the country holding more than US$10,000 or the equivalent in euros, and the local courts punish breaches very severely; currency leaving the country is checked strictly too. Euros can be hard to change, while US dollars and cards are accepted in many places.
- Traveller declaration — An online immigration declaration has to be filled in before you enter or leave Guatemala. Tourism needs no visa for up to 90 days, and overstaying is charged at the border at 20 quetzales for each excess day.
- Meat at the border — There are no particular import restrictions except on some food products, namely cured meats and raw meat.
