Do you need a local guide in Ecuador?
Useful, not required. On the mainland, neither source makes a guide compulsory. The Galápagos are the exception: the national park's visit rules tell visitors to see its protected areas with a specialised guide and to use authorised tourism services. For the mainland, the Italian foreign ministry recommends organising excursions through well-known agencies, using only experienced guides for high-mountain trips, and taking care in national parks, where tourists have been assaulted.

Drones are not allowed, professional filming needs authorisation, and camping is permitted only at designated sites with prior authorisation. - Parks and trails by day, in company — Tourists have been assaulted in national parks, and assaults and thefts are frequent on the paths up to Ruco Pichincha near Quito's cable car. - Driving in is strongly discouraged — The ministry strongly advises against entering Ecuador by car or motorcycle across the northern border with Colombia or the southern one with Peru. If the trip cannot wait, go to the border office yourself to have your passport stamped even when nobody checks you, or immigration can stop you on the way out, and make sure the paperwork of a vehicle hired in another country is in order.
