Our meeting is on June 25.
Sebiba traces its origins to a very ancient page of history, dating back over 3000 years.
Its creation lies in the aftermath of the Pharaoh's death when Moses (Moussa) triumphed over his troops. Local tradition tells of a fratricidal war between the Oraren and the Tra’orfitt (tribe of Tassili N’Ajjer) that lasted many years. It was only upon learning of Moses's victory over Pharaoh that they consented to cease their conflicts, thus sealing a peace pact that has united them ever since.
Every year, for ten days, the two Tuareg communities prepare to commemorate this important event in their history. They maintain the tradition by recreating the historical site of the last battle. Inhabitants of Tassili N’Ajjer and Tuaregs from neighboring countries gather in Djanet to celebrate Sebiba on the day of Ashoura. The ritual continues: a simulated fight, a symbolic dance with a sword in one hand and a scarf in the other, representing the conflict and the peace pact.
Adorned in their finest indigo costumes, the women sing to the rhythm of the tambourines, encouraging their warriors whose steps raise clouds of dust and sand. The elders from the districts of El Mihane and Azzelouaz now oversee the proceedings. Songs, costumes, and dances have become the focal points of the celebration. At the end of the day, the signing of the peace pact concludes Sebiba, thus perpetuating the history of the tribes of Djanet.
