Once the center of the ancient Aksumite Kingdom, Axum is one of Ethiopia’s most important historical and religious destinations. This full-day city tour introduces you to the remarkable archaeological sites, legends, and cultural heritage that shaped one of Africa’s oldest civilizations. Upon arrival at Axum Airport or pickup from your hotel, transfer to your hotel before starting the tour around the city’s famous historical landmarks. Begin with the impressive Stelae Park, home to towering granite obelisks carved centuries ago as monuments for kings and nobles. Continue to the underground royal tombs, showcasing the engineering and burial traditions of the ancient kingdom. The tour also includes the Archaeological Museum, where artifacts and historical collections help explain the rise of the Aksumite civilization. Visit the legendary Swimming Pool of Queen Sheba and the Ezana Inscription, an important ancient inscription often compared to the Rosetta Stone for its historical significance. In the morning, continue to the tombs of King Kaleb and his son King Gebremeskel, located on the outskirts of Axum. After lunch, explore the remains of Queen Sheba’s Palace, associated with the legendary queen connected to Ethiopian history and tradition. The final stop is St. Mary of Zion Church, one of Ethiopia’s most sacred religious sites and traditionally believed to be connected with the Ark of the Covenant. At the end of the tour, return to your hotel in Axum.
