From our arrival at the port of Oran, where we meet up with our Touareg guide, we embark on a 3-day 2,000km drive south to the desert town of Illizi, headquarters of our local guide's family, from where we subsequently head further south to Djanet, and from there we venture deep into the Sahara proper, the Tadrart on the Libyan border.​ The Tadrart region is world-renowned for its fascinating archaeological formations, and equally for its incredibly well-preserved prehistoric rock art, notably in the Tassili n'Ajjer, the national park on a sprawling plateau. Our return journey is via the Hoggar Mountains, back to In Salah, for a 2-day 1,400km drive north to our departure port.
