Your safari begins with a warm welcome at Kigali International Airport, where your driver-guide will meet you. From there it’s a scenic 3-hour drive north through rolling hills, terraced farmland, and traditional villages to Musanze, the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park.

Check into your lodge, enjoy a meal of fresh, traditional Rwandan dishes, and attend an evening briefing on the trek ahead. It’s a gentle, low-key start that sets the tone for the days to come.

Day 2 — Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The main event. (Gorilla Adventure Trekking). After an early breakfast, head to park headquarters for the morning briefing, where you’ll be assigned to one of the park’s habituated gorilla families and paired with an experienced guide who’ll walk you through trekking etiquette.

The hike itself winds through Virunga Mountains bamboo forest and past giant lobelias, with volcanoes National Park as a backdrop. Terrain can be steep and muddy, and trek duration varies — anywhere from roughly 2 to 7 hours round trip — depending on where the gorilla family is that day. Porters are available to carry your pack and assist on difficult stretches, for a small fee.

Once you reach the family, you’ll keep a respectful distance (a minimum of around 7 meters) and spend one hour observing — silverbacks, playful juveniles, and mothers with infants going about their day just feet away. It’s the moment most travelers say makes the entire trip worthwhile.

Best time to visit: June–September (long dry season) and December–February (short dry season) offers the best trekking conditions, though the park is trekkable year-round. Minimum age: 15 years old for gorilla trekking — a strict rule enforced across all three gorilla-trekking countries. Fitness level: Moderate to strenuous depending on where the gorilla family is located that day; reasonable fitness is recommended, and porters are available. What to pack: Sturdy hiking boots, rain gear (even in dry season), long sleeves and trousers, gardening-style gloves, binoculars, camera, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. Permits: Gorilla permits are strictly limited — Volcanoes National Park issues around 112 permits per day across its habituated families. Book 3–6 months in advance through our platform.
