6-Day Kyrgyzstan Winter Tour | Karakol, Issyk-Kul & Snow Adventures

Karakol Ski Resort • Winter Kayaking • Hot Springs • Snow Canyons • Eagle Hunter

Experience Kyrgyzstan in winter on a six-day journey from Bishkek through the snowy landscapes of Chon-Kemin and Issyk-Kul to Karakol and the southern shore of the lake.

This itinerary combines a day at Karakol Ski Resort, guided winter kayaking on Issyk-Kul, hot springs, frozen waterfalls, red-rock canyons and encounters with Kyrgyz nomadic traditions.

Rather than spending the entire trip at a ski resort, you travel through several very different parts of northern Kyrgyzstan — from Silk Road history and snowy valleys to the eastern Tien Shan and the quieter southern shore of Issyk-Kul.

6 Days / 5 Nights • December–February • Private & Small-Group Tour • Start / Finish: Bishkek

SIGNATURE EXPERIENCES

Ski in the Tien Shan at Karakol

Spend a full day at Karakol Ski Resort, one of Kyrgyzstan's best-known winter mountain areas.

The resort offers slopes for different experience levels and panoramic views across the surrounding Terskey Ala-Too mountains.

Your transportation to and from the ski area is organized as part of the tour.

Please note: ski passes, ski or snowboard rental and instructor services are not included in the standard tour price. This allows each traveler to choose the equipment and ski package that suits their experience level.

Winter Kayaking on Issyk-Kul

One of the most unusual experiences of the journey is guided winter kayaking on Issyk-Kul Lake.

While the surrounding mountains are covered in snow, Issyk-Kul itself remains largely ice-free, creating a dramatic contrast between open water and the winter Tien Shan landscape.

The kayaking activity and local kayaking guide are included in the tour price.

The exact launch point and timing may be adjusted according to weather, wind and lake conditions.

Relax in Karakol Hot Springs

After a winter day in the mountains, visit local thermal pools near Karakol.

The hot-spring experience is included and provides a relaxing contrast to skiing and outdoor winter activities.

Bring swimwear and suitable footwear for the changing area.

Explore Kyrgyzstan's Winter Canyons

The journey includes several very different landscapes:

Kok-Moinok with its eroded red formations,

Jeti-Oguz with its famous red sandstone cliffs,

Barskoon Gorge with mountain forest and winter waterfalls,

and Skazka Canyon, where sculpted red and ochre rock formations contrast with snow and the blue waters of Issyk-Kul.

Winter gives these familiar summer destinations a completely different atmosphere.

Meet a Kyrgyz Eagle Hunter

On the final day, meet a local berkutchi on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Learn how the ancient tradition of hunting with golden eagles has been passed between generations and see the connection between the hunter and his bird.

The private eagle-hunting demonstration is included in the tour.

WHY TRAVELERS CHOOSE THIS TOUR

More Than a Ski Holiday

This is not a six-day stay at one resort.

You combine skiing with road travel, local culture, kayaking, hot springs, canyons and the landscapes of Issyk-Kul.

See Both Sides of Issyk-Kul

The route travels east toward Karakol and returns along the southern shore, allowing you to experience several different landscapes around the lake instead of repeating the same road.

A Balance of Adventure and Comfort

The program includes active experiences without turning the journey into an expedition.

Most walks are short and adaptable, while nights are spent in established accommodation rather than winter camping.

Local Winter Experiences

Kayaking, eagle hunting, regional food, local guesthouses and smaller villages complement the better-known ski experience in Karakol. ITINERARY

IMPORTANT BEFORE DAY 1

We strongly recommend arriving in Bishkek at least one day before the tour begins.

Day 1 starts in the morning and immediately continues outside Bishkek.

Arriving on an international flight on the same morning creates a risk of missing part of the program because of a flight delay, immigration, baggage collection or simply fatigue after an overnight journey.

Your hotel in Bishkek before Day 1 is not included in the standard tour price.

An additional hotel night and airport transfer can be arranged separately.

If your flight arrives very early on Day 1, joining the tour may still be possible depending on your actual arrival time, but arriving the previous day remains the recommended option.

DAY 1 — BISHKEK → KEGETI → BURANA TOWER → CHON-KEMIN

Leave Bishkek in the morning and begin the journey east through the Chuy Valley.

Our first mountain experience is Kegeti Gorge, where snow-covered slopes and the narrow valley provide the first introduction to Kyrgyzstan's winter landscape.

Continue toward Burana Tower, part of the archaeological remains of ancient Balasagun, an important settlement on the Silk Road.

Explore the tower, archaeological area and traditional stone balbals before continuing toward Chon-Kemin.

After arrival, settle into the guesthouse and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the valley.

Depending on weather and local conditions, the program can include a winter horseback-riding experience in Chon-Kemin.

Route: Bishkek → Kegeti → Burana → Chon-Kemin Accommodation: Guesthouse, Chon-Kemin Meals: Lunch, Dinner Highlights: Kegeti Gorge • Burana Tower • Chon-Kemin

DAY 2 — CHON-KEMIN → KOK-MOINOK → ISSYK-KUL → KARAKOL

After breakfast, leave Chon-Kemin and continue toward Issyk-Kul.

Stop at Kok-Moinok Canyon, where erosion has created narrow passages and colorful formations dramatically different from the surrounding snowy mountains.

Continue along the northern side of Issyk-Kul.

When winter road conditions allow, the route can include scenic stops in the mountain gorges of the northern shore.

The landscape gradually changes as we approach the eastern part of the lake and the higher Tien Shan mountains surrounding Karakol.

Arrive in Karakol in the evening and check into the hotel.

Route: Chon-Kemin → Kok-Moinok → Northern Issyk-Kul → Karakol Accommodation: Hotel, Karakol Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Highlights: Kok-Moinok • Issyk-Kul • Tien Shan Scenery

DAY 3 — KARAKOL SKI RESORT → HOT SPRINGS

Today is dedicated to the winter mountains above Karakol.

After breakfast, drive to Karakol Ski Resort and spend the main part of the day on the slopes.

Travelers can choose skiing or snowboarding according to their level and interests.

Those who do not ski can still enjoy the mountain atmosphere and snowy scenery, although alternative activities should be discussed in advance.

Ski costs

Not included:

ski pass;

ski rental;

snowboard rental;

ski or snowboard instructor;

optional additional resort activities.

This keeps the package flexible for beginners, experienced skiers and travelers bringing their own equipment.

After the ski day, return from the mountains and visit local hot springs to relax in warm thermal pools.

Return to Karakol for dinner.

Accommodation: Hotel, Karakol Meals: Breakfast, Dinner Included Experience: Hot springs Not Included: Ski pass, equipment rental and instructor

DAY 4 — OLD MILL MUSEUM → WINTER KAYAKING ON ISSYK-KUL → DUNGAN DINNER

After breakfast, travel toward the Ak-Suu / Teploklyuchenka area and visit the Old Mill Museum.

The museum provides a small but interesting look at the local history and traditional technology of the region.

Afterwards, continue toward Issyk-Kul for one of the signature experiences of the tour:

Winter Kayaking on Issyk-Kul

Meet the local kayaking team and prepare for a guided paddle on the lake.

Snow-covered mountains surrounding open water create one of the most unusual winter landscapes of the entire journey.

The exact kayaking location and duration can be adjusted depending on wind and weather conditions.

Guided kayaking is included in the tour price.

Return to Karakol later in the day.

In the evening, enjoy a traditional Dungan dinner and discover one of the cuisines that reflects Karakol's multicultural history.

Accommodation: Hotel, Karakol Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Included: Old Mill Museum • Guided Kayaking • Dungan Dinner

DAY 5 — KARAKOL → JETI-OGUZ → BARSKOON → SKAZKA → BOKONBAEVO

After breakfast, leave Karakol and begin travelling along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Jeti-Oguz

Our first major stop is Jeti-Oguz Gorge, known for its distinctive red-rock formations.

In winter, snow creates a strong contrast with the red sandstone cliffs.

Enjoy a short walk and viewpoints before continuing west.

Barskoon Gorge

Continue to Barskoon Gorge, a mountain valley of Tien Shan spruce forest, river scenery and waterfalls.

We make a short winter walk toward accessible waterfall viewpoints.

The exact walking route depends on snow and ice conditions.

Skazka Canyon

Later, visit Skazka — Fairy Tale Canyon.

Thousands of years of erosion have created ridges, towers and colorful formations overlooking the southern side of Issyk-Kul.

The canyon is especially photogenic in winter when patches of snow contrast with the red and ochre rock.

Continue to Bokonbaevo for the night.

Route: Karakol → Jeti-Oguz → Barskoon → Skazka → Bokonbaevo Accommodation: Guesthouse / winter accommodation, Bokonbaevo Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Highlights: Jeti-Oguz • Barskoon Waterfalls • Skazka Canyon

DAY 6 — BOKONBAEVO → EAGLE HUNTER → ISSYK-KUL → BOOM GORGE → BISHKEK

After breakfast, meet a local berkutchi — Kyrgyz eagle hunter.

Learn about the traditional relationship between hunter and golden eagle and see a private demonstration.

The experience introduces one of the best-known traditions of Kyrgyz nomadic culture and provides an opportunity to speak directly with a local practitioner.

After the eagle-hunting experience, begin the return journey toward Bishkek.

Travel along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul before entering Boom Gorge, the natural corridor connecting the Issyk-Kul basin with the Chuy Valley.

Continue to Bishkek, where the six-day journey ends.

Route: Bokonbaevo → Eagle Hunter → Southern Issyk-Kul → Boom Gorge → Bishkek Meals: Breakfast, Lunch Included Experience: Eagle Hunting Demonstration Finish: Bishkek

Please note

The standard tour finishes in Bishkek on Day 6.

An airport transfer after the tour is not automatically included unless confirmed in your booking.
