Do you need a local guide in Thailand?
Yes — required by law. Not for a car you rent locally, but yes if you're bringing your own vehicle across a border. Thailand's Department of Land Transport requires a Foreign Vehicle Permit before you can drive a foreign-registered car, motorcycle or van into the country, and its own portal is explicit: "Please contact licensed travel agency for permit application" — a foreigner cannot file it alone.

Why it matters in Thailand
