Rules for overlanding in Suriname

Which licence you need
- All vehicles — What the ministry lists is an International Driving Permit on the 1949 Geneva convention model. Check what applies to the licence you hold.
An International Driving Permit states the categories it covers: check yours covers what you will actually drive. A car licence does not cover a motorcycle, and a heavy camper or a truck can need a higher category.
At the wheel
- Insurance — Third-party motor insurance is compulsory.
- Carnet de passages — A carnet de passages en douane is required for a vehicle imported temporarily.
- Belts and child seats — Seatbelts are compulsory at the wheel, and children must travel in proper child seats.
- Phones — Using a phone while driving is not allowed and carries an administrative fine.
- Taxis — If you need a taxi, use the official companies. The alternative is the taxi service run from the main hotels.
What catches travellers out
- Register before arriving — Whatever the purpose of your trip, you must register on the official Suriname immigration portal from seven days before arrival and flag your imminent entry. The process issues a QR code that is asked for at Paramaribo airport and at every entry point, Albina, Nickerie and the port of Paramaribo included, and before you leave you have to record your departure date on the same portal to close the procedure.
- Entry fee, not visa — For tourism, a USD 50 entry fee voucher replaces the tourist visa and covers stays of up to 90 days; buy it online through VFS Global, ideally at least two weeks before you travel. Any other purpose needs a visa arranged in advance through the Suriname embassy in Belgium, which covers Italy, and a stay of more than 90 days needs a temporary stay authorisation (MVK) obtained before entry.
- Drugs and packages — Penalties for being caught in possession of drugs are heavy and run to several years in prison. Keep your luggage properly closed and never agree to carry a package for someone else: it could contain drugs.
- At customs — There is no limit on bringing currency in or out, but sums above USD 10,000 must be declared. A dog or cat can only be brought in with a vet certificate issued at least 14 days before departure.
