Safety in Sudan: what overland travellers should know

Safety
- All travel advised against — The civil war that broke out in April 2023 is still being fought and reaches almost every part of Sudan, the states of Kordofan, Darfur, Blue Nile and White Nile above all. The ministry advises against all travel to the country: the few quiet pockets that remain can change from one day to the next.
- Mines and unexploded ordnance — Several areas of the country are contaminated by mines and unexploded ordnance.
- Two vehicles, never alone — Do not move around on your own: travel in a group led by reliable, competent local companions. For any trip outside built-up areas the ministry says to use at least two vehicles.
- Permits and registration — Travel permits are required to leave the territory of Red Sea State. Holders of an ordinary passport must also register their presence with the local authorities (Alien Registration Office) within three days of entering.
- Crime and kidnapping — Bag-snatching, theft and break-ins into homes for robbery are all increasing. Hostile acts and kidnappings, foreigners included, cannot be ruled out, so avoid carrying large sums of cash or showing anything valuable.
