Do you need a local guide in Saudi Arabia?
Useful, not required. Not for ordinary travel: the main roads between towns are at Western standards, and with an International Driving Permit you can drive and rent a vehicle. Some places cannot be done on your own, though: at Hegra, the Royal Commission for AlUla says visits run as organised tours by coach or 4x4 and self-driving is not allowed. A local guide also helps with rules that are strictly applied, from the compulsory exit that keeps non-Muslims out of Mecca to the banned strip along the northern border.

Why it matters in Saudi Arabia
- Hegra is seen on a tour — The Royal Commission for AlUla says the best way to explore Hegra is an organised tour, in a private premium 4x4 or on a coach, stopping at sites such as Jabal Ithlib and the Tomb of Lihyan son of Kuza. Self-driving is not allowed, the number of tours each day is limited, so pre-booking is highly recommended, and visitors who mistreat the monuments are asked to leave. - Roads you must not take — Non-Muslims face an absolute ban on entering Mecca, and the road towards it forces them onto a compulsory exit, with possible checkpoints. Since 21 November 2015 access has been banned within 20 km of the northern border and, in the Eastern Province, from the border as far as Hafar Al Batin and Khafji. - The Yemen border provinces — The Italian foreign ministry says not to go to the border area with Yemen. Since July 2026 Houthi attacks have hit infrastructure and energy and oil plants in the provinces of Jazan, Najran and Aseer, causing injuries, and any need to travel there should be weighed with extreme care. - Arabic signs, police-station settlements — Outside the main cities road signs follow international models but are mostly in Arabic. Road accidents are extremely frequent: vehicles must not be moved until the police arrive, and everyone involved who is not taken to hospital is normally brought to the police station to establish responsibility and settle the damage.
