Do you need a local guide in Pakistan?
Strongly advised. For trekking and mountaineering in the restricted areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, yes: the region's Tourism Department requires a permit there and makes hiring a licensed guide and porter mandatory. Elsewhere neither source makes a guide compulsory, but the advice is firm. The Italian foreign ministry says to limit travel to essential trips, to coordinate with a serious, trusted local contact who can arrange reliable accompaniment and assistance from arrival onwards, and notes that some areas can only be visited with a No Objection Certificate from the Pakistani authorities.
