Do you need a local guide in North Macedonia?
Not needed for most trips. No — a valid licence and normal caution are enough on the road (the Italian foreign ministry notes that an Italian licence is usable for six months). The practical thing to know isn't about a guide at all: North Macedonia's customs authority allows a foreign-registered vehicle in for private use for up to six months within any twelve-month period, under the decree implementing the customs law, without needing a local guide to arrange it.

Why it matters in North Macedonia

- Winter tyres and fire season, not guide-dependent — From April to October the hot, dry climate can set off dangerous fires, so care is needed in the countryside; from 15 November to 15 April, vehicles up to 3.5 t must carry winter tyres or chains on extra-urban roads.
