Do you need a local guide in Netherlands?
Useful, not required. Not for a general visit, but local knowledge earns its keep if you're overlanding in a camper or campervan. Camping outside a designated site is banned by municipal ordinance — Venlo's is one example, and each Dutch municipality writes its own version with its own exceptions, so what is allowed in one town may not be in the next. The Italian foreign ministry adds a nationwide rule on top: never sleep overnight in a camper or caravan at a service station, on the motorway, or in a park-and-ride, because of theft.

Why it matters in Netherlands
- Wild camping is banned by local rule — Venlo's local regulation states: "Kamperen buiten daartoe bestemde kampeerterreinen is op grond van artikel 4:18 APV lid 1 Venlo niet toegestaan" — camping outside designated campsites is not permitted under article 4:18, paragraph 1 of Venlo's local ordinance. Other Dutch municipalities set the same kind of rule under their own APV, so the exact wording and exceptions vary town to town. - Exemptions exist, but only on request — The same article allows an exemption to be granted under paragraph 3 — "Op grond van artikel 4:18 APV lid 3 kan hiervoor ontheffing worden verleend" — for cases such as event camping, group camping or camper parking with existing facilities, but only if it is requested from the municipality in advance. - Does this municipality's APV allow camping here, or do we need a designated campsite instead?
- Does this town grant camper-parking exemptions, and how far ahead do we need to request one?
- Where's the nearest official campsite, so we're not tempted to sleep at a service station or park-and-ride tonight?
- What's the theft risk where we're parking, and have we secured our documents and valuables accordingly?
