Do you need a local guide in Lithuania?
Not needed for most trips. No. Lithuania is generally safe, with crime rates below the European average, main roads surfaced and passable in winter, and, as Lithuania Travel puts it, the freedom to visit all forests, private ones included. What you do need to know are the limits: nature reserves, special-purpose forests, border regions and military sites are excepted, and a tent or camper van may stay overnight only in designated campsites.

- Borders and military areas — The Italian foreign ministry advises some prudence right next to the borders with Russia's Kaliningrad district and with Belarus, where checks are heavier, and says to cross only at authorised points with valid documents. - Winter is serious — Snow tyres are compulsory from 1 November to 1 April, and lights must be on day and night all year. Many secondary roads are only partly paved and hard going in snow or rain, and every motor vehicle must carry a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher of at least 2 kg.
