Iran for overland travelers
Iran has always been a hinge for overland travel. It connects Turkey and the Caucasus with Pakistan, Central Asia and the Persian Gulf, while also holding its own huge internal route network: Alborz mountain roads, Zagros passes, desert highways, old caravan towns and some of the most dramatic dry landscapes in Asia.
For vehicle-based travelers, the two big desert names are Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut. The Lut is famous for heat, wind-carved kaluts, salt plains and huge empty scale; Kavir gives a more central desert identity with routes around Yazd, Kashan, Mesr, Garmeh and the edge of protected areas. These routes reward planning, permission awareness and local guidance because not every line on a map is legal, safe or sensible.
Iran is also an overland connector. Routes through Tabriz, Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, Yazd and Kerman can link into Armenia, Turkiye, Turkmenistan or Pakistan.
