Safety in Finland: what overland travellers should know

Safety
- Subarctic weather — The unpredictable weather of the subarctic climate, above all in the northern regions and Lapland, causes serious delays and disruption to rail and air transport. Check the forecast in advance and equip yourself properly, and always keep clothing suited to the conditions plus a stock of snacks and water within reach rather than packed away.
- Remote excursions — For excursions, and particularly in remote areas outside the towns, the ministry says to use well-known tour agencies that are accredited in the international circuits.
- Petty crime — Crime levels are relatively low, but thefts and pickpocketing rise during the summer season and over the holidays, mainly in the centre of the capital and in the main tourist hubs such as Rovaniemi. Keep an eye on bags and backpacks.
- Terrorism — Finland shares Europe's exposure to international terrorism. After the terrorist attack of 18 August 2017 in Turku, the Finnish authorities raised the alert level.
