Which licence you need

All vehicles — You can hire and drive a car on an International Driving Permit, or on an Italian licence with a certified English translation, under article 35 of Eswatini's 2007 Road Traffic Act. Check what applies to the licence you hold.

An International Driving Permit states the categories it covers: check yours covers what you will actually drive. A car licence does not cover a motorcycle, and a heavy camper or a truck can need a higher category.

At the wheel

Insurance — Third-party liability cover is compulsory.
Temporary import — A Carnet de Passage en Douane is required for a vehicle brought in temporarily.
Animals on the road — The ministry flags this twice: driving here needs particular attention because animals stray onto the carriageway.
Roads — The road network crossing the country and linking it to Mozambique and South Africa is in good condition.

What catches travellers out

Bring cash — Arrive with cash, preferably South African rand, especially if you plan trips outside the towns. Mastercard and VISA are the most widely used cards.
Stays over 30 days — No visa is needed for stays under 30 days. Beyond that, even purely for tourism, you must apply to the interior ministry for a residence permit, which is usually granted quickly.
Passport — Your passport needs at least three months' remaining validity and two blank pages.
