Which driving licence do I need in Andorra?
All vehicles
An Italian licence is accepted, and so is an International Driving Permit. Check what applies to the licence you hold.
An International Driving Permit states the categories it covers: check yours covers what you will actually drive. A car licence does not cover a motorcycle, and a heavy camper or a truck can need a higher category.
At the wheel
What insurance do I need to drive in Andorra?
An Italian policy is valid in Andorra too. Check what applies to the policy you hold.
Driving someone else's vehicle
Carry a letter of authority from the owner, with the signature notarised.
Chains and snow tyres
Through the winter season you should be equipped with chains or snow tyres.
What catches travellers out
Drugs
The rules on possessing and using narcotics are very restrictive. Italians have been arrested and held here, in some cases for a long time.
Outside the EU
Andorra is not part of the European Union, so customs checks apply both on the way in and on the way out.
Not in Schengen
The country is outside the Schengen area. Italians need no visa for tourist stays under 90 days, as long as the identity document covers the whole stay; beyond 90 days you must apply for a residence permit through the local immigration service.
Roaming
Roaming tariffs here are not covered by EU rules. Check the costs and conditions with your operator before you arrive.
Vehicle, drones and permits
Can I bring and fly a drone in Andorra?
The Government of Andorra states in its drone FAQ that recreational flights generally fall in the open category: the drone must stay in sight, up to 120 m above ground, not over crowds of people, and respect restricted or prohibited zones. A drone weighing more than 250 g must be identified with the Government and covered by the regulatory civil liability insurance. The natural parks of Sorteny, Comapedrosa and Madriu-Perafita-Claror are prohibited zones unless the ministry responsible for the environment gives express authorisation. Can I drive off-road and in national parks in Andorra?
Andorra's official tourism board (Andorra Turisme) notes in its mountain recommendations that, if you take your own vehicle, you should plan where to leave it because parking spaces can be limited and some areas are protected, such as the Incles Valley in Canillo, which means they cannot be accessed by private vehicle.
